OPEN LETTER TO POLISH
AND FOREIGN ECOLOGICAL ORGANIZATIONS

For several months the Kuwait's pits have been burning. It is one of the gravest ecological disasters in the history of mankind.

It is a monstrosity and cannot be morally justified being a result of a conscious decision of man. It was for the first time that ecological weaponry was used during the war in spite of the fact that nobody was able to foresee all the results of this barbarous move.

We do not want to evaluate the parties of the Gulf Conflict, but we cannot remain insensitive to the ecological disaster it has caused. It is a crime against humanity!

We, as the members of different ecological groups and organizations, appeal to all the goodwill people, in particular - to those connected with ecological movement worldwide for their active involvement in nature preservation from effects of the burning oilfields.

First of all, we think that the world public opinion is informed too superficially about this tragedy and its impact on our environment. As yet nobody has, in a credible way, given the information on when the fire would be put out.

We are conscious of the technical problems that such a fire-extingui- shing operation could present. The world community has faced such a challenge for the first time. This, however, cannot mean our passive awaiting the development of evets. In a few years' time we may regret our present passiveness.

We inform you that the problem of saving the Persian Gulf and its neighboring regions from the ecological disaster will be the object of our special interest.

We aspect that you also will display your care.
